Unveiling of Glen Michaels’ Signature: 7 pm
Gallery Talk: Thursday, May 4, 6 pm
The beams of the Scarab Club’s second-floor lounge have become a living artifact, evolving over the years with the addition of each artist who adds their signature. Artists are invited to sign the beam as a means of honoring their significant and lasting contribution to the arts. In April, Glen Michaels will add his signature to those of Diego Rivera, Marcel Duchamp, Norman Rockwell and Juliana Force.
Glen Michaels, architectural sculptor, who makes his home in Birmingham, Michigan, has created unique works of art commissioned for major public buildings and private collections throughout the country. Michaels is known for the composition of his work, which includes an outstanding array of materials. He is the recipient of many awards and grants including a Michigan Foundation for the Arts Award and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Apprenticeship Grant. Major commissions include the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC, The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Building, Goddard Space Center, in Greenbelt, Maryland and the Detroit People Mover, Bricktown Station. Michaels holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Michaels’ work will be exhibited in the SC’s main gallery along with a number of other beam signatories, including Gary Grimshaw, Michael Hall, John Hegarty, Lester Johnson, Balthazar Korab, Charles McGee, Nancy Mitchnick, Patricia Quinlan, Bill Rauhauser, Gilda Snowden and Robert Wilbert.
