Marie Woo’s career has spanned nearly seventy years. Over that time she has established herself not only as an artist, but  a scholar and innovator. Early in 2020 the Kresge Foundation presented her with their Eminent Artist award, recognizing her groundbreaking work as an educator, researcher, curator and preservationist. The Scarab Club was honored to invite Marie to add her signature to the historic beams in its second-floor lounge, joining such artists as Diego Rivera, Marcel Duchamp and Charles McGee.

“Her elegant and subtle ceramics question the traditional functional nature of pottery through her own constantly evolving artistic language,” said MaryAnn Wilkinson, Scarab Club executive director. “Not content to simply work in the studio, she has helped to preserve Asian folk traditions in ceramics that were in danger of dying out. And though not originally from the area, she chose to spend her long, productive career in metro Detroit.”
As to future endeavors, the possibilities are wide open. “I’m really trying to retire,” she said with a quick laugh. “But it’s hard – things, ideas, they keep coming. I’m in my 90s. To have so much happen now – I keep thinking, ‘What’s next’?”
