Tribute to the late great Detroit Bluesman, Little Junior Cannady

Little Junior Cannaday, b. 6/29/34 in Luka, MS, d. 5/17/11 in Detroit. Lula is a mile from 49 & 61! He learned guitar from his dad, Thomas Cannaday, Sr. A your Junior Cannady often rode his bicycle to juke joints in order to listen to the blues artists from outside. He moved to Memphis around age 18, then on to Chicago where he hung with Buddy Guy & performed with Elmore James & his Broom Dusters & also with blues piano legend Otis Spann. By 1955 he was in Detroit where he met Little Sonny, John Lee Hooker & also Mr Bo & his brother, Little Mac Collins & eventually recording for Bobo Jenkins Big Star label.
He was booked by Curtis Ballor around FL, AL & MS, & performed around Detroit at extended gigs at joints like the Apex Lounge, the Parrot Lounge, the State Fair Lounge, Cooley’s Bar, the Black & Tan, the Soup Kitchen, etc. He lived on the east side of Detroit & had two wives & six children. David Ruffin of the Temptations got his start singing with Jr at the Black & Tan.
Bassist & bandleader Ben Moore backed Jr. around town for years & his band appears on his No Cover recordings and will be the host band today 80 year old blues drummer Papa Lee, a longtime friend of Junior’s, will sit in for a few tunes.
