ABOUT THE PROJECT
We exChange is a three-phase, year-long collaboration inviting 12 metro Detroit visual and literary artists to explore and co-create work reimagining the meaning of change in a time of chaos — its limits and its unexpected possibilities. In each phase of the project — loosely inspired by the French surrealist art game known as exquisite corpse and the prescient words of Black science fiction writer Octavia Butler — the artists each create new works influenced by images and words from the prior phase.

The Scarab Club is proud to partner with Signal-Return to showcase the culminating works as well as an immersive audio experience designed to help the public simultaneously explore the concept of change. The suite of custom prints on display reflect the willingness of individual artists to collectively blend their ideas, approaches and work into unplanned joint creations. The exhibition also marks the first time that all 12 artists will view their works in connection with one another and as sparks for exchange with the public.

We exChange is co-directed by Signal-Return Director and visual artist Lynne Avadenka and writer Nichole M. Christian.

The Scarab Club invites submissions for its annual member exhibition and book. It is an unthemed, all media exhibition. Participation is open to all SC member artists in good standing who are 18 years or older.

JUROR
Grace Serra is the Art Collection Curator at Wayne State University and Exhibition Curator at the University of Michigan North Campus Research Complex. She has worked in the field of public arts for over thirty years, coordinating major art installations in the Detroit People Mover Stations, Detroit Receiving Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Michigan.

Serra has served as adjunct faculty at Henry Ford College, Macomb College, Eastern Michigan University and Wayne State University teaching visual arts, art history and arts administration courses. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) from Wayne State University, Master of Arts (Painting) from Dominican University, in Florence, Italy and Master of Arts (Arts Administration) from Eastern Michigan University.

SC ANNUAL BOOK
All SC members who complete and pay for a submission to the 109th Gold Medal Exhibition, regardless of whether their work is accepted for the exhibition, will have an image of their work included in the Annual, a book published each year by the SC.

This exhibit represents the work of 20th century Ukrainian artists in the diaspora. Many were trained in Ukraine or Europe and were uprooted from their ancestral homeland Ukraine during the turbulent years of man-made famine, World Wars, and foreign invasions. They and their families sought to survive and thrive artistically in foreign lands.

While establishing their lives in a new country much of their art was inspired by Ukrainian symbolism, history, nature and art. This is evident even in the works of William Kurelek who was the son of an immigrant from Ukraine who settled in Canada in 1923.

Many of the pieces were collected originally by Dr. Paul Dzul and his wife Irene. He was an active member and leader in the Ukrainian community in the Metropolitan Detroit as well as being a prominent otolaryngologist, Associate Professor Emeritus (WSU) and the founder of the American Ukrainian Medical Foundation in 1996. After his passing in 2015, the collection was entrusted to his son Dr. Andrew Dzul and daughter-in-law Christina who expanded on the collection by acquiring new art pieces. On display is a selection of representative pieces of artists such as Edward Kozak, Viktor Cymbal, Alexis Gritchenko, Jacques Hnizdowsky and others.

Since 1944 the Birmingham Society of Women Painters has promoted the achievements and leadership of women in the arts. In 1957, with support from business and community leaders, the organization founded the Bloomfield Art Association. Three years later the coalition developed an innovative proposal, exceptional for its time, to transform an obsolete Birmingham public works facility into a vibrant community center for the arts, which continues to grow and thrive today as the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center.

Marat Paransky, Juror

Marat Paransky was born in Ukraine in 1986. By the time his family settled in Metro Detroit they had lived in three countries and on three continents. Marat spoke three languages, but his favorite language was visual. Paransky finished Wayne State University with a dual degree: a BFA in Drawing and Printmaking, and a BA in Political Science. He received his MFA in Visual Arts from Lesley University's College of Art & Design in Cambridge, MA. Paransky's work has been exhibited throughout Michigan, as well as Windsor, ON, the Boston area, San Francisco, Fayetteville, AR, and Nashville, TN.

The Mighty Real Queer Detroit project spans seventeen venues in metro Detroit. The exhibitions present a month-long historical examination of the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community and its longtime allies, featuring established and emerging Detroit artists, as well as artists whose careers were shortened by HIV/AIDS.

In conjunction with the project, a calendar of events highlighting panel discussions, artist talks, performances, and poetry readings will be issued in all media; a catalogue of selected artwork, including essays examining the exhibit from a variety of historical, cultural and personal perspectives, will be available. The exhibition catalogue will feature the juried works of 100 plus artists as well as important essays by Dr. Tim Retzloff, Dream Hampton, Dennis Nawrocki, Eve Kurcharski, and the project’s director, Patrick Burton.

As a further exploration, Mighty Real/Queer Detroit will address loss and remembrance by including significant, rarely seen and unexhibited art objects. Works

For decades the Scarab Club has hosted an annual photography exhibition. It is an unthemed, juried exhibition, open to all artists, and including showcasing a wide range of contemporary photography, including experimental techniques, and video.

Joe Gall, based in Detroit, is an award-winning photographer, extreme sportsman, and travel addict. He has photographed thousands of bands, artists, athletes and personalities spanning the cultural spectrum of architecture, sports, fashion, music, outdoors, and the entertainment industry.
